Roman Sport
The Circus Maximus was the largest stadium in ancient Rome. It was used for chariot racing, an extremely popular sport of the time. This arena was used for a full millennium of races. The Colosseum on the other hand was used for another popular sport- Gladiator fighting. This violent form of entertainment held the interest of the whole Roman population. Bulls, rhinos, tigers, and lions are the most notorious for fighting men in arenas. The Colosseum was actually designed to fit a tall giraffe through the arched doorways. Exotic animals were the best surprise for any anxious crowd waiting for some action. This fight to the death (or almost-death) was the most exciting form of entertainment for Romans. Gladiators who win the fight become celebrities and were almost treated as rock-stars. Slaves could have even been freed for winning matches.
